How to verify a used iPhone before buying

Buying a used iPhone can save money, but only if you verify the device first. Follow this checklist before handing over payment.

    Step 1: Get the IMEI

Ask the seller to dial *#06# while you watch, or go to Settings → General → About → IMEI. Never rely on a photo of the IMEI — see it live on the device.

Step 2: Run an IMEI check

Use our free IMEI verification tool to check:

    • Blacklist status (lost/stolen report)

    • Carrier lock status

    • Model and specifications

    • Warranty information

Step 3: Check Find My iPhone

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Find My. If "Find My iPhone" is ON and linked to another Apple ID, the seller must remove it before you buy. A device locked to another account cannot be used.

    Step 4: Inspect physically

    • Test all buttons, cameras, speakers, and touchscreen

    • Check battery health in Settings → Battery → Battery Health

    • Verify the serial number on the device matches the box

Red flags — walk away if:

    • IMEI check shows blacklist status

    • Seller refuses to show IMEI in person

    • Price is suspiciously low

    • Find My iPhone cannot be disabled
