What is an IMEI number and why does it matter?

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit identifier assigned to every mobile device. Think of it as a serial number for your phone — no two devices share the same IMEI.

    Why IMEI matters

    • Device identification — carriers and manufacturers use IMEI to identify your specific phone on their network.

    • Lost or stolen reporting — if a device is reported lost or stolen, its IMEI can be added to a global blacklist (GSMA database).

    • Buying used phones safely — checking the IMEI before purchase helps you avoid blacklisted or counterfeit devices.

    • Warranty and support — manufacturers use IMEI to verify warranty status and device authenticity.

    How to find your IMEI

On most smartphones, dial *#06# on the keypad — the IMEI appears instantly on screen. You can also find it in Settings → About Phone, or on a label inside the battery compartment (older models) or on the original box.

Our free IMEI checker lets you verify any device status instantly using this number.
